Rangerland

When Janie was ten years old, she ran the grasslands in West Texas with her best friend, Ricky Mills. Every time Mama tried to grab her to do housework, Janie ran out the door and headed to her territory that she’d named Rangerland. She reigned as President while Ricky was content to hold the title of Emperor. Ricky seemed to think that Emperor outranked President. Janie let him think so, but she knew better. They were in America, by golly, not in Red China or the godless Soviet Union. Together, the friends tracked animals, inspected road kill, and made plans to explore the jungles in darkest Africa, like their hero, Jungle Jim.

Chapter Three chronicles Janie’s days in Rangerland in her voice, first person POV. We learn more about the family dynamics in Janie’s home. We meet Mavis, Rick’s pain-in-the-butt little sister. What happens in Rangerland will have far-reaching consequences for Janie.
